MERIP’s program and activities interest me greatly, and I would like to find a way to support and assist your program. Do you have an avenue for receiving donations? Can they be tax deductible from my U,S. income?

I was a teacher at PICS from 1968-71, and remember my years in Pohnpei with great warmth. I was a member of the Conservations Society of Pohnpei for many years, but that organization seems to have disappeared. I look forward to a new opportunity to help the people of Pohnpei continue to succeed in the 21st century.

I graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angles, California in 1965, and entered the U.S. Peace Corps shortly thereafter. I taught school in Midwest Nigeria and later in Ethiopia before moving to Pohnpei. I received an M.S. degree in zoology at the University fo Hawaii, with the intent of returning to Pohnpei as a better qualified science teacher, but marriage, parenting and economics led me to California, where I have had a career as a school teacher, home remodeler and property manager. Now retired, my wife and I have participated in Habitat for Humanity home building projects in some 12 countries, and have been instrumental in founding and maintaining Charter middle and secondary schools in our local community.
I look forward hearing from MERIP.

How are your algae growing? I’ve spent years helping shellfish companies in the US; Hawaii, San Diego, & Seattle areas….also lived for years in Samoa and would love to help your facility if you need more algae.. equipment, techniques, species, and even feeding shellfish from larval to out planting organisms is where I specialize…i run a small consulting company, Algae Systems Consulting. My email is : blairpaul@yahoo.com if interested… Kalahngan, Blair Paul, M.Sc.

The Caroline Islands

The Federated States of Micronesia is located in the Western Pacific Ocean and is part of the Caroline Islands. The four main islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrea and Yap, along with their outlying atolls are spread across an water area of over one million square miles.

Pohnpei, FSM

Pohnpei Island is the largest, highest, most populous, and most developed single island in the FSM. It is located at the eastern end of the Caroline Islands and is about midway between Honolulu and Manila. Coordinates are 6°59′N 158°12′E.

Most of Pohnpei is ruggedly mountainous, lush and verdant, with the highest peak at 791 metres (2,595 ft). The rainforest is dense and rich; extensive mangrove swamps line much of the low shore. The island is roughly circular in outline, its 80-mile (130 km) circumference is surrounded by a coral reef.
